The axe of Morris Graves, oil on canvas, 8 × 10”. I was fortunate to be awarded the Morris Graves residency in 2025. I got to spend a month working and living in the studio of Morris Graves! There was a woodburning stove, as nights get cold up there in Northern California. One morning, the light was hitting this axe just so. I had to do a quick sketch of it.
